CEFR Levels Explained: What A1 to C2 Really Means

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) describes language ability from A1 to C2. Knowing your level helps you choose the right books and measure progress.

A1 — Beginner Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases. Can introduce yourself and answer simple questions.

A2 — Elementary Can understand sentences about familiar areas like family, shopping and local geography. Can handle simple, routine exchanges.

B1 — Intermediate Can deal with most situations while travelling. Can describe experiences, events and ambitions, and give reasons for opinions.

B2 — Upper-Intermediate Can understand complex texts on concrete and abstract topics. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity.

C1 — Advanced Can understand demanding texts and express ideas fluently without searching for expressions. Uses language flexibly.

C2 — Proficiency Can understand virtually everything heard or read, summarise information and express themselves spontaneously and precisely.
